Oncology Nurse Fellow, IMB

General Responsibilities:
The Oncology Nursing Fellow must be dynamic and experienced in both clinical nursing and
nursing education. We hope that our program will serve as a model for hematologic and oncologic care in resource-limited settings worldwide. In order for us to provide high quality and compassionate care to our patients, our nurses must be trained to provide care for such a challenging population. The Nurse Fellow will help develop our oncology-nursing program and curriculum, and serve as a mentor and educator of nurses in country.
Specific Responsibilities:
Clinical Responsibilities (60%)
• Work with Program Director to ensure a care plan is created for each patient.
• Perform clinical teaching, mentorship and capacity building of local nurses in hematology and oncology related services through participation in daily clinical rounds, outpatient clinics, academic presentations, case review, and other activities.
• Accompany staff in the creation and updating of charts for all patients with entire care plan outlined; review weekly and ensure care plan is being followed without delays.
• As part of oncology team, meet with all patients monthly to assess symptom management, nutritional status, and plan of care.
• Accompany staff with the emotional sequelae of difficult medical situations and prognoses and with interpersonal challenges faced by patients and their families as needed.
• Attend weekly patient calls with Boston to review patients and difficult cases
• Coordinate with hospital nursing and clinical leadership on organization-wide standard of care and training for nurses.
• Work in collaboration with nursing leadership to use oncology competency checklists to assure nurses have achieved desired skills.
• Work with nursing and clinical leadership to establish standard operating procedures/policies for oncology care.
• Support clinical nursing staff in the clinical evaluation of patients and administration of chemotherapy.
Non-Clinical Responsibilities (Human Resources, Programmatic, Financial) (40%):
• Accompany nursing and clinical leadership to identify, orient, and train nurses to care for oncology patients.
• Work alongside the Oncology Nurse Manager to strengthen his/her management skills
• Provide regular bedside mentorship to nurses in protocol adherence, chemotherapy mixing and administration, and supportive care.
• Support program coordinators and development staff in providing clinical information in a timely, comprehensive, and accurate manner for grant proposals and reports
• Collaborate with staff in the development and implementation of clinical training programs for nursing staff and community health workers.
• Collaborate with clinical team to develop a set of nursing care indicators to facilitate monitoring and evaluation/quality improvement efforts, in collaboration with the M&E team and coordinate clinical quality improvement initiatives.
• Collaborate with the Community Health team to strengthen the community-based outreach, referral, and follow-up systems.
• Assist with the recruitment, coordination, and integration of various nurse specialist volunteers coming to the site for short-term stays.
• Collaborate in the development of new and support existing partnerships with local nursing schools as well as foreign academic institutions to support nurse capacity building initiatives (in collaboration with clinical leadership).
• Provide input into the writing of grant proposals to fund further clinical training of nurses in collaboration with the Boston-based development and training teams.
Qualifications:
• At least -3-5 years post-graduation work experience as an oncology RN or NP
• Strong clinical skills
• Fluency in English
• Previous experience in nurse clinical training and education, preferably in resource-limited settings
• Previous experience in unit-based education/mentorship
• Willingness to live and work in a lovely rural setting
• Demonstrated possession of excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; written and oral communication skills
• Demonstrated ability managing complexity and prioritizing multiple tasks;
• Commitment to social justice
• Ability to work productively in highly collaborative settings while also able to function independently.
